The Holy Sight of Lord Jagannath Pleases Devotees

The Jagannath Temple

Puri is a beautiful coastal town globally famous tourist destination due to its Puri Beach, Shri Jagannath Temple and Konark Sun Temple; all of them are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This place is among the Char Dham (four most sacred places) of India, the pilgrimage every Hindu aims to visit once in their lifetime.

Devotees feel privileged and glorified by the holy sight of Lord Jagannath, Subhadra, and Balabhadra. The god and goddesses are ornate according to different occasion and festivals. The temple is built on a big platform amid the city and is enclosed by seven meters high walls. There are four entrance gates facing four directions named as Singhadwara, Ashwadwara, Hathidara and Vyaghra Dwara and the name depicts four different animals - lion, horse, elephant, and tiger. The structure of the temple is pyramid shaped and was constructed in the 11th century, which became the starting point of the world famous car festival in the month of July.

The special thing about the deities in this temple is it is made up of wood, unlike the other deities, which are made up of metals or stone. The wooden figures are ritually changed after every twelve or nineteen years by the wood of sacred trees that are directly chosen by God himself and this tradition is called as Navakalevara ceremony.

The rich historic heritage back from the 3rd B.C., welcomes fun seekers, history lovers, and pilgrims; again the splendid sea beach is for an additional fun to the whole trip. Chilika Lake, the largest briny water lakes ideal for migratory birds is a must watch.
